The Hidden Currents of Home Care Leadership: Scaling Without Burning Out

Two summers ago, I took a rugged fishing trip to Alaska, which I write about in my book EntreThrive. This trip changed my perspective about the uncertainties of life and business forever. Unlike many Alaskan trips these days, this one wasn't about lodges, hired cooks, and guides taking you to the best fishing holes. No, this was seven solid days floating fifty miles of remote river, with the wild Alaskan tundra stretching endlessly on both sides. 

Let me break down my journey, because I bet you'll see yourself in it: 

Days 1 & 2: The excitement was real. Weather? Perfect. Fishing? Decent. Even the challenges of camping and swatting mosquitoes couldn't dampen my spirits. Sound familiar? It's like those early days of your home care agency - when your dream of serving seniors was finally becoming reality. The thrill of those first clients, the joy of making a difference. Your excitement carried you through any obstacle. 

Days 3 & 4: Then reality hit. Hard. Intense wind. Constant rain. The river widened, making it nearly impossible to cast far enough. I started wondering what I'd gotten myself into. Ring any bells? It's that moment when running your agency feels overwhelming - when staffing challenges, regulations, and financial pressures have you questioning everything. These are the days that make or break most home care entrepreneurs. 

Days 5 & 6: Here's where it gets good. The weather? Still challenging. But we'd finally made it to salmon fishing, and wow - what a difference! Those earlier struggles suddenly felt worth it. Each success brought laughter, thrills, and pure joy. This is your agency hitting its stride - when systems click, your team gels, and you're making the impact you always dreamed of. 

Day 7: Heading home with stories that would last a lifetime. Even the tough moments had become part of the adventure. Perhaps for you Day 7 could represent your big exit, an 8-week sabbatical, or simply more freedom to enjoy the life you’ve always dreamed of.  

Here's what hit me hard: The entrepreneurs who truly thrive aren't the ones who somehow skip Days 3 & 4.  They're the ones who learn to find meaning right in the middle of those challenges. Just like I had to stay secure in my raft while navigating fallen trees and debris, you've got to stay steady while handling whatever your agency throws at you. 

Trust me on this - you can't rush through Days 3 & 4 hoping to get to the good stuff. Those challenging days are preparing you for something bigger.
